Why your luxury brand needs a brand strategy

One of the most confusing things for clients is the brand strategy — why they need it and what exactly a brand strategy does. And I get it. On paper it looks more like a check list that you need to fill in and check off the boxes. It’s when I start to work with a luxury brand that it start to make more sense. The importance and use of it gets more tangible for the client when we work on it together.

If you look to all the luxury brands in fashion — Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, Fendi and such — they are all in the same industry, have a rich heritage and focused on the high income ideal client that wants quality items. However, they all have a different strategy in place that is unique for their brand. A different lifestyle, interpretation of brand values or a different brand essence. 

You can easily see the difference between a brand like Chanel or Gucci because they have an unique brand strategy in place that created a brand identity that you can recognize. In our eyes it is an important step that you can’t skip if you want to build your luxury brand. 

I get that you will only know its power when you start to work on it, I want to focus on the three main reasons why your luxury brand needs a brand strategy.

01 | Unique pattern

A brand strategy for luxury brands is the unique pattern to create the brand with. You define what makes your brand unique, what it stands for and the value it delivers for your ideal client.

Just like with a pattern you create the outlines of what the end results — your brand & goals — need to look like. To make a comparison with a Birkin, if a stitching is out of place on a bag or there is a mark on the leather in the designing phase, the Birkin loses its quality and isn’t fit to be sold. These are the boundaries within something meets the high quality standard.

A brand strategy creates the boundaries you need to stay within to avoid faulty stitching or getting marks on its image.

We’ve said it before: without a strong strategy and branding, your luxury brand can’t grow. Just a strategy isn’t going to get you results because the client starts to have a connection with a brand when they can relate to it and it’s tangible. And beautiful visuals alone won’t turn your fans in loyal clients because the feeling isn’t there without the strategy. You need both and in the right order: from strategy to identity to building. 

The strategy creates the pattern to create the identity with and build the brand through marketing and valuable content. With a clear vision you can build your brand for long term success.

When you know the boundaries and criteria to work within, you know what works and doesn’t work for your brand. You have a clear vision of where you want to go and how to get there. 

You can create consistent messaging and consistency in your visual representation which helps with creating brand recognition for your ideal clients. The more your ideal client gets exposed to your brand, the more they start to recognize it. When they start to recognize your brand they will be more aware of what your brand is about and what you can do for them.

However, in order to create this effect you need to know why your brand does what it does and have the right ideal client insights to create the experience that will lead to recognition and awareness. Eventually turning them from a potential client to a loyal ambassador.
